ALICE LLOYD COLLEGE • Pippa Passes

Alice Lloyd College is proud to nominate George Nichols III, Class of 1980, for induction into the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities Hall of Fame. A nationally recognized leader in financial services, public policy, and higher education, Nichols has built a remarkable career rooted in servant leadership, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.

A native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Nichols came to Alice Lloyd College with dreams of pursuing basketball. His experience along the banks of Caney Creek, however, helped him discover a much greater purpose. At ALC, faculty members challenged him to look beyond athletics and recognize his potential for leadership and service. He earned his associate degree in 1980 before continuing his education at Western Kentucky University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and economics, and the University of Louisville, where he earned a master's degree.

Nichols' career has been marked by an extraordinary series of leadership roles and historic firsts. At only 28 years old, he became CEO of Central State Hospital in Louisville. He later held leadership positions with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kentucky and served as Executive Director of the Kentucky Health Policy Board and Special Advisor to Governor Paul Patton on healthcare policy and economic development.

In 1995, Nichols made Kentucky history when he became the Commonwealth's first African American Insurance Commissioner, overseeing regulation of Kentucky's $10 billion insurance industry. He later became the first African American president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. In 2001, Nichols joined New York Life, beginning a distinguished 17-year career that culminated in his service as Executive Vice President of the Office of Governmental Affairs. He also became the first African American elected to New York Life's Executive Management Committee.

In 2018, Nichols was named the tenth President and CEO of The American College of Financial Services, where he continues to influence the education and development of financial professionals across the nation. His leadership has earned widespread recognition, including multiple honors from Savoy, Forbes' inaugural Culture 50 Champions, a ThinkAdvisor Luminaries Award for Executive Leadership, and the inaugural Alonzo Herndon Award from Business Insurance.

Yet Nichols' legacy extends far beyond professional accomplishments. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to mentoring young people, strengthening educational opportunities, and serving others. He currently chairs the board of City Year, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving educational outcomes for students in underserved communities.

Most importantly to Alice Lloyd College, George has never forgotten where his journey began. For nearly two decades, he has served on ALC's Board of Trustees, helping ensure that future generations of students could receive the same opportunity that transformed his own life. In 2019, the College named him Alumnus of the Year.

George Nichols III represents the very best of Kentucky's independent colleges: a life transformed through education and, in turn, devoted to transforming the lives of others. His groundbreaking career, national influence, and lifelong commitment to service make him exceptionally deserving of induction into the AIKCU Hall of Fame.
