AIKCU alumni include two recent Nobel Prize winners (chemistry in 2002 and medicine in 1993), a former governor, college presidents, legendary coaches, CEOs, entrepreneurs. They can be found in leadership roles in communities throughout the Commonwealth, as physicians, judges, state legislators, teachers (more than 1/3 of Kentucky teachers have one degree from an AIKCU institution), nurses, scientists, and dedicated citizens in all 120 Kentucky counties.
About 100,000 alumni of Kentucky’s independent colleges and universities currently live in Kentucky. These alumni, in addition to being leaders in a wide variety of fields, play a key role in the state’s economy. AIKCU alumni living in Kentucky earn about $4 billion annually and produce $416 million in state tax revenue, according to AIKCU’s 2006 report Private Colleges, Public Benefits: The Economic and Community Impact of Kentucky’s Independent Colleges and Universities on the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Alumni spend more than $3.1 billion a year in Kentucky, generating $5.9 billion in total economic impact that accounts for about 31,500 jobs.
