AIKCU honored retiring Transylvania University president Charles L. Shearer at its April 12 celebration event for his dedicated service to Transy and the Association. Shearer will retire at the end of the 2009-10 academic year after 27 years as Transylvania’s president.

AIKCU President Gary S. Cox presented Dr. Shearer with a rocking chair to enjoy during his retirement. Colmon Elridge, (Transy ‘03) Executive Asst. to Governor Steve Beshear, Transylvania Director of Career Services Susan Rayer, and Berea College President Larry Shinn all took to the podium to speak of Dr. Shearer’s ethics, strong leadership, and commitment to Transy, to students, and to the advancement of independent colleges in Kentucky.

Video of remarks about Dr. Shearer by Colmon Elridge (Transy ‘03), Executive Assistant to Governor Steve Beshear:

President Shearer has been active in the association throughout his tenure at Transylvania. He was one of the co-founders of AIKCU’s collaborative Spotlight job fair and served as chair during a critical period in the organization’s history, as AIKCU completed a merger of the Kentucky Independent College Foundation and the Council on Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities.

Transylvania announced this week that Owen Williams will be Shearer’s successor.

Video: AIKCU Interns reflect on Frankfort experience

May 1st, 2009

AIKCU’s five interns - representing Asbury College, Campbellsville University, Lindsey Wilson College, and St. Catharine College - recently finished their final work and class assignments and returned to their home campuses. (See an earlier profile of all five of the interns here.) From mid-January to April these outstanding students spent approximately 30 hours per week working in a state agency and met twice a week for seminar classes. The classes were taught by veteran Courier-Journal reporter Dick Wilson and Dr. Amy Watts of the Kentucky Long Term Policy Research Center, and featured many guest speakers representing all areas of Kentucky government.

We caught up with three of our interns shortly before the semester ended to ask them what they learned from the experience and how they felt it impacted their lives.

This was the 9th year of the AIKCU Frankfort Semester Internship Program. In even years, AIKCU interns work directly with members of the General Assembly. For more information on the intern program, visit http://www.aikcu.org/about/initiatives/frankfortinternships/.
