Frankfort Semester Internships
The AIKCU Frankfort Semester Internship Program is a major AIKCU initiative that seeks to enhance students’ academic, civic, and professional skills through internship experiences, public policy symposia, academic seminars and exposure to the ideas and perspectives of a variety of notable citizens. Participating students live, work and study in Frankfort under the guidance of AIKCU intern coordinator Richard Wilson, former higher education reporter and Frankfort bureau chief for the Louisville Courier-Journal.In even-numbered years, students work directly with state legislators – responding to constituent inquiries, assisting in the crafting and passage of legislation, and performing other duties integral to the legislative process. In odd-numbered years, students are placed in a variety of administrative offices within state government.
The 2008 Frankfort Semester Legislative Internship Program offers selected students the opportunity to gain valuable experience working for members of Kentucky’s General Assembly. Students will work at least thirty hours per week and complete two evening seminars focused upon government and public policy issues. Interns will be eligible for up to fifteen hours of classroom credit in accordance with the student’s home campus policies. Interns receive a monthly living stipend during their internship experience.
Juniors, seniors, and graduate students in good standing, and attending one of Kentucky’s 20 nonprofit, independent colleges or universities are eligible to apply for the program. The program will begin with an orientation session in early January 2008 and conclude in April.
