Graph of the Week: Value of Independent College Sector Facilities, Assets

May 29th, 2009

Each Friday (almost) on AIKCU.org we feature a new graphic that highlights an important aspect of independent higher education in Kentucky.

Our last several graphs have looked at various aspects of the economic impact that Kentucky’s independent colleges and universities make upon the Commonealth. This week we’re going back to the Private Colleges, Public Benefits report to look at another way that independent colleges bring value to Kentucky: the value of privately-funded resources they make available to students, and in many cases, to the public at large.

In fiscal 2003, the replacement value of educational facilities and equipment at Kentucky’s independent colleges and universities was $1.1 billion dollars (prior to much new construction on AIKCU campuses). Although privately funded, these facilities serve very public purposes. Many of these facilities, including academic libraries, science facilities, performance spaces, arts centers, athletic venues, and other assets are rendered to the public at little or no cost. Total assets, including endowment resources were more than $2.88 billion.

That’s more than $1 billion dollars in facilities in which the Commonwealth of Kentucky hasn’t had to invest a dime. That’s a pretty good return on investment.
