AIKCU IT Symposium brings campuses together to share knowledge, explore common issues

More than fifty information technology professionals from AIKCU member campuses assembled in Lexington on the campus of Transylvania University earlier this month for an AIKCU Technology Symposium. The event was the first time that campus IT staff members have been brought together to discuss trends in campus technology, examine common issues, and network among their peers.
The day began with a welcome from Transylvania President Charles L. Shearer, who praised the attendees for taking the opportunity to convene and learn from each other so that they can more effectively support the academic missions of their respective campuses.
The symposium examined best practices in a variety of IT focus areas or “tracks”: instruction, systems, networking, security, and help desk. Sessions included presentations, panels and open discussions, all of which were led and moderated by campus IT professionals.
The event also provided AIKCU information technology staff with an opportunity to meet with AIKCU’s technology business partners, including The Learning House, Inc.; Kentucky Recycling; Tech Depot; Bell Industries; New Horizons Computer Learning Centers of Lexington; and IntraSource.
The IT Symposium is the latest in a series of ongoing technology initiatives coordinated by AIKCU Technology Coordinator Steve Dooley. Campus IT directors have met quarterly under Dooley’s leadership since he joined the AIKCU staff last fall. The Technology Symposium grew out of these meetings. Campus IT directors suggested developing a one-day event that would bring together their diverse professional staff members for more extensive, low cost networking and professional development opportunities. The Symposium was planned over several months by a committee made up of Art Moore, Centre College; John Thompson, Transylvania University; Grace Dalton, Midway College; and Dooley.
