Frankfort High School senior Brent Yancey isn’t sure yet where he’ll be going to college next fall, but as the proud owner of a new iPod nano he’ll be able to take his music with him wherever he decides to go. Brent won the iPod in a prize drawing held by the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU) as part of the 2006 Kentucky Private College Week held in June.

Kentucky Private College Week is an annual summer event sponsored by AIKCU and its twenty member campuses. Campuses work together to offer visits twice a day at the same times each day throughout the week. Students sign up online to visit as few as one or as many as ten campuses during the week. For every campus students visit they receive an application fee waiver. The 2006 Kentucky Private College Week saw students make almost 400 individual campus visits.

This year, every student who visited three or more campuses during Private College Week was entered into a prize drawing for the iPod and other prizes. In addition to iPod winner Brent Yancey, other prize winners included: Michael Harover, Trinity Christian Academy (Lexington) – Speedway gas card; Becky Hellman, Larue County High School – Speedway gas card; and Clint Wagner, George Rogers Clark High School – Office Depot gift card.

Brent and his parents visited three colleges during Private College Week. Brent liked the opportunity to get to know the different campuses in such a convenient way. “I really enjoyed it and thought it was informative and fun,” says Brent. “I’d recommend it to other students. I really learned a lot about the colleges.”

Brent was encouraged to get out and visit the campuses by his guidance counselor at Frankfort High, Joretta Crowe. Ms. Crowe, a Transylvania alum, helped get the word out about Private College Week to students and parents through her newsletter and emails.

Crowe also appreciates the convenience Private College Week offers busy students and parents. “Students can hit multiple colleges in the week, and everyone’s on the same page as to what students and parents expect to see during their visits,” Crowe said.

When asked at school how he felt about winning the iPod giveaway, Brent merely smiled and said, “I feel great!”
